What does being in trance feel like?

I will guide you into hypnosis, usually by asking you to simply close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. As you become more and more relaxed, I may deepen your state by suggesting relaxing images and suggesting that you find your “perfectly peaceful place.” You will continue to hear everything that is going on around you – I find that my senses are increased in hypnosis (though my eyes are closed!).  Your subconscious mind will become receptive to positive, beneficial suggestions. After treatment you “awake” feeling refreshed and positive.

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Not if you don’t want to be.  Babies and very young children are usually unsuitable subjects otherwise most people can achieve at least a light level of trance, which can be enough to work with.

Can children benefit from hypnotherapy?

Yes. Children from 6 to 16 can be treated, but only with the consent (and preferably in the presence) of their parent or guardian. They can be helped with, for example, exam nerves, shyness/confidence, motivation, nervous ticks, delayed thumb-sucking.

I specialise in working with children because of my background as a primary school teacher and my current role as a private tutor. Having been a primary school teacher for over twenty years (and therefore CRB-checked), I worked regularly with children.  From the age of nine or ten they usually respond well to hypnotherapy.  It is possible to work with younger children using NLP techniques. I can offer home visits as it may be best to see a child in a familiar, safe place.

Can I be made to do anything or say anything I don’t want to under hypnosis?

No. You are always in control and conscious of your surroundings. You hear everything that is going on; nothing happens without your consent. I provide a safe, supportive environment for you whilst helping you relax and make the positive, beneficial changes you choose for yourself.  This is therapy, not stage hypnotism!

What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

During the free initial telephone consultation I will discuss with you what you want to achieve with hypnotherapy. I will explain how the therapy can work and take a detailed case history, asking about your health and any other significant life events.

We will agree a course of treatment and the probable number of sessions required to achieve your objectives. I will then plan sessions designed to help you make the desired changes that you have identified.

The number of sessions required varies but many issues can often be resolved in 1 or 2 sessions. Hypno-analysis, which may be strongly recommended in some cases, may require up to (approximately) 12 sessions.

The exception is the one-off, 2 hour Stop Smoking Now therapy.

Often, sessions will begin as they might in Counselling, with a discussion of what is going on for you and how you are reflecting on it.  Then it concludes with hypnosis/relaxation/suggestion/analysis, depending on what seems right for you – and what you want.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you wish to cancel an appointment, or are otherwise unable to attend, you will need to give at least 24 hours notice, otherwise half the cost of the session will be payable.

What payment methods do you accept?

Payment should be made by cash or cheque at the end of each session.  You can also pay, in advance, by PayPal.

Will you keep my situation confidential?

Any information collected from you as a client or potential client, including your contact details will be held in the strictest confidence. The details that you disclose are used solely for the purpose of providing you, the client, with the highest level of service. Your confidentiality and privacy will be respected at all times. The only exception to this is if you tell me that you are going to cause harm to yourself or another.
